Conservative Devon County Council candidates Toby Gray, Colin Slade and Paul Osman have today issued a warning to Devon residents about the dangers of electing a Liberal Democrat-controlled council.
"Look at Somerset, where Liberal Democrats are introducing 24/7 parking charges, including Sundays, evenings, and even in villages that used to have free parking. That could be Devon's future if the Lib Dems get control here," said Paul Osman, who is standing for Willand and Uffculme.
In Somerset, the Liberal Democrat-run council is proposing to roll out new parking charges in towns and rural areas alike, to plug a £100 million hole in its budget. The council has sought permission from the Labour government to impose an inflation-busting 7.5% council tax rise, the highest in decades. Papers ahead of the budget meeting reveal the council is planning on introducing:
- Sunday parking fees across the county
- Evening parking charges after 6pm
- New charges in villages and rural communities
- Year-round fees in popular tourist areas
The candidates warn that if the Liberal Democrats gain power similar anti-motorist policies could hit Devon's towns, villages, and tourist hotspots.
Cllr Colin Slade, who is re-standing in his ward of Tiverton East said "Wherever Liberal Democrats have control they see parking as an easy target. Not just in Somerset, they have done it in Mid Devon, and in the South Hams. It is bad news for local residents and hurts footfall for local businesses."
"These policies would devastate our high streets, punish families, and damage the tourism and hospitality sectors that are vital to Devon’s economy," added Toby Gray.
The Conservative candidates are urging residents to stand against these unfair parking charges and back a council that will protect free and fair parking for Devon. With county council elections on the 1st of May, this is a clear warning, if the Liberal Democrats take control, motorists and businesses will pay the price.
Residents in Somerset and Devon are encouraged to sign the petition.
